Equipment to Start Dancing

To begin, children and adults need good shoes. These shoes are called ghillie pumps and are of very soft leather with eyelets and ties and must fit exactly. This is the one investment that must be made in order to learn Highland Dance.

As the dancer progresses and wishes to take medal tests or participate in competitions, then a kilt, vest and blouse must be purchased for the Highland dances and either a white dress with sash or an Aboyne costume must be added.

Here are some examples of kilt, vest and blouse

The Scottish Kilt

This is one of the National dances. The Lilt is a more flowing and graceful dance in nature and has borrowed its intricate steps from the classical ballet of the 18th century. Pictured to the right is myself performing the Lilt in competition and in proper costume.
